TGen’s 18th Annual Step-N-Out Scheduled for November 5

Register Today for TGen’s Annual Event That Kicks Off Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month

PHOENIX, SEPTEMBER 20, 2023Get ready to make a difference. The Arizona Boardwalk, located at 9500 East Vía de Ventura in Scottsdale, provides the setting for TGen’s 18th annual Step-N-Out, a family-friendly 5k event dedicated to supporting pancreatic cancer research at the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen), part of City of Hope.

The event takes place on Sunday, November 5, starting at 6:30 a.m. Join TGen for a day of inspiration and action as they kick off Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month with purpose.

“Step-N-Out unites the community and generates awareness for pancreatic cancer all while having fun,” said Erin Massey, Chief Development Officer at TGen, and Vice President of Philanthropy at City of Hope. “Patients, survivors, loved ones, caregivers, medical professionals, and supporters from across the nation converge in-person and virtually to raise awareness and vital funds in support of the latest research and clinical advances for pancreatic cancer at TGen.”

In-person activities include a 5K run/walk, a 1-mile Fun Run, and a Kids' Dash. We hope you’ll join TGen in the fight against pancreatic cancer whether walking with or in honor of a loved one, as a personal challenge, or by simply supporting the cause. Every step counts in improving the survival rates of pancreatic cancer.

Pancreatic cancer is currently the 3rd leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States, with approximately 495,000 new cases diagnosed annually worldwide. The five-year survival rate is now 12%, however, survival rates can vary depending on the stage at which the cancer is diagnosed and other individual factors. Several factors can increase the risk of developing pancreatic cancer, including age, smoking, family history of pancreatic cancer, obesity, chronic pancreatitis, and certain inherited genetic conditions.

Under the direction of Daniel D. Von Hoff, M.D., TGen’s research and clinical trials into pancreatic cancer have led to some of the most significant medical advances ever made against the disease. Since 1990, of the four drugs approved by the FDA that improved survival for patients with pancreatic cancer, TGen played a pivotal role by leading the trials for three of those new agents. Today, as part of City of Hope, one of the largest cancer research and treatment organizations in the United States, TGen scientists work with doctors around the world to develop improved diagnostics and treatments for patients everywhere when the standard of care fails.

A Spectacular New Venue

New this year, Step-N-Out takes place at the Arizona Boardwalk, an exciting destination boasting nine marquee attractions, diverse dining options, and family entertainment. The Arizona Boardwalk offers a unique experience for both participants and spectators, adding an extra layer of excitement to this year’s event.

Calling All Sponsors and Teams

For the second year in row, our generous 2023 Step-N-Out presenting sponsor is The Michael Francis Family: Grace Rose and Dunn Orthodontics. The TGen Foundation is looking for corporate sponsors who want to showcase their organization and brand while engaging customers and partners in a meaningful way as they demonstrate their commitment to the community. Sponsorships for Step-N-Out range from $1,500 to $10,000.

Organizations can also form corporate teams giving leadership and employees an opportunity to share their compassion through volunteerism. Participating as a corporate team creates a special camaraderie that transfers into the workplace.

Additionally, family teams are the heart of our event. Gather friends and family to celebrate, honor or remember a loved one whose life has been touched by pancreatic cancer – or just because you want to get the group together for a great cause.
