Willie Mae of Gilbert, Arizona and Stone Mountain, Georgia peacefully passed away on March 11, 2008 after a courageous and remarkable 10-year battle with ovarian cancer.
Willie Holmes was a wife who faithfully helped her husband Charlie through a long and wonderful military career in the United States Marine Corps. She ensured that the "home front" was always being taken care of as she raised their two daughters, Wynne and Wydale. Willie enjoyed travel, cooking, golf and being a hostess to friends and family. She always enjoyed meeting new friends (everyone she met was soon a friend!) and faced the many challenges with her humor and southern charm that had originated in Stone Mountain, Georgia.
Miss Willie, (as she was fondly called), was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1998 when she found a small lump in her neck. She always went through the years of chemotherapy with a wonderful outlook that she would be cured. In order to help find a cure and to lend hope that others might be helped, Willie also participated in several drug trial treatments. Willie enjoyed her bible study groups and found much support from her unwavering friends, doctors and especially, her nurses, who could be such a bright spot in her treatment and give needed personal comfort during difficult times. Her family and many dear friends will truly miss her.
