Lucinda “Cindy” Lynn Scholl (née Miller), age 62, was received into the arms of her Lord and savior on Monday, April 2, 2018 at the Hospice of the Valley in Scottsdale. From her birth in Fort Smith, Arkansas on December 9, 1955 to her death, Cindy was an irresistible light of hope, joy, empowerment and authentic love to all she met.
Growing up in the Omaha, Nebraska, Cindy was a vibrant, fearless and funny girl who loved riding her horse at her uncle’s farm, rooting for Cornhusker football, tossing bugs in her sister Diane’s hair, playing tricks on her brother Paul, and spending summers in the sunshine at her family’s lakeside cabin.
Cindy was intelligent, quick-witted, confident and daring—qualities that, in 1982, enchanted David Scholl, her co-worker at Merrill Lynch. She was David’s kite, and he was her string. They were married in 1984 and spent nearly 34 beautiful years loving, growing and making each other laugh. Cindy spoiled her husband with her culinary talents, pride in homemaking, and dedication to raising their kids. David was Cindy’s safe place, her best friend, her partner in all things, and in the last 15 months of her life, her tireless, tender caregiver.
Cindy and David had three children: John (31), Andrew (28) and Carly (26), or, as their mother affectionately dubbed them, “John-o,” “Drew Bob,” and “Mickey Cheeseball,” respectively. Her natural knack for nurturing, teaching and empowering established an immoveable foundation of love, transparency and support on which all three of her children built their lives. John, Drew and Carly are blessed to remember Cindy not only as their mother, but as their friend, mentor and sister in Christ.
Throughout her whole life, and especially once she found the glory and grace of Jesus at age 43, Cindy’s ministry revolved around intentional hospitality, and she welcomed everyone into her home, especially young married couples and mothers. Her partnership with David as husband and wife served as an extraordinary example of love, respect, friendship, loyalty and kindness for those in fellowship with them. Cindy’s home was always buzzing with genuine conversation, ambrosial with the smell of her spectacular cooking, and warm with the feel of intimacy fostered by Cindy’s love of truth, connection and community. Her dinner table hosted thousands of holy moments.
Cindy will be remembered for her easy laugh, her selflessness, her passion for genealogy, her spirit of playfulness and creativity, her ability to empower, her devotion to her family, and her unwavering faith in the Lord. Throughout 15 months of battling cancer, Cindy never complained, never moped, and she never threw a pity party, though, if she had, it probably would’ve been a fabulous soiree. Cindy put her hope, her faith, her future and her identity in Christ. She was not defined by the things of this world, but by His eternal love and mercy.
Cindy is survived by her parents John and Carolyn Miller; her husband David; her sons John and Drew; her daughter Carly; her daughters-in-law Joey and Tori; her sister and brother-in-law Diane and Dan Silashki; her brother and sister-in-law Paul and Barbara Miller; her granddaughters Mary and Grace; her mother-in-law Barbara Scholl; her sister- and brother-in-law Tracy and Craig Coppola; and eight nieces and nephews. They will dearly miss her nicknames, sugar cookies, practical jokes, holiday meals, jovial hugs, and bold love.
