Applications for TGen summer programs close Feb. 5
Helios Scholars at TGen and TGen Bioscience Leadership Academy provide hands-on experience for students
PHOENIX, Ariz. — Feb. 1, 2021 — The Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen), an affiliate of City of Hope, announced today that the application deadline for its summer educational programs — Helios Scholars at TGen and TGen Bioscience Leadership Academy — is Friday, Feb. 5 at 5:00 p.m.
Helios Scholars at TGen targets high school seniors and college students while the two-week TGen Bioscience Leadership Academy focuses solely on high school students. Both programs are supported by the Helios Education Foundation, a philanthropic organization focused on creating opportunities for individuals to succeed in postsecondary education.
“Our programs draw students from across the state, with an emphasis on those who have limited opportunities to conduct research or engage with professionals at the high-caliber level afforded at TGen,” said Kristen Kaus, TGen Manager of Education and Outreach.
Helios Scholars at TGen
Helios Scholars at TGen is a paid, eight-week summer internship in biomedical research open to incoming and continuing undergraduate, graduate, and medical school students enrolled at an Arizona high school, college or university. A total of 45 internships are available each summer in laboratory research, computational biology and bioinformatics, mathematics and statistics, and research administration. Scholars work hand-in-hand with TGen faculty and staff mentors. Past interns boast an array of impressive accomplishments: published scientific abstracts and manuscripts, national student rankings, acceptance into tier-one graduate and medical schools, national awards and scholarships.
TGen Bioscience Leadership Academy
TGen Bioscience Leadership Academy is a two-week bioscience program serving 20 Arizona high school students. The intensive education and leadership program focuses on elevating students' understanding of the biosciences and precision medicine. TGen faculty and staff share their research expertise and expose students to technical skill basics, lab shadowing, clinical trials, bioethics, experimental design, clinical application of genomic medicine and the translational process, a diversity of careers, and topics in neurological disease, cancer, diabetes, and infectious disease.
The program also includes a leadership component focused on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) professional skills such as science communication, public speaking, interdisciplinary and collaborative workplace skills, and networking. Each graduate receives a $1,000 scholarship.
