Seena Magowitz Foundation: Triple survival of pancreatic cancer patients
Seena Magowitz Golf Classic, a TGen fundraiser, Aug. 25-27
BOSTON — Aug. 13, 2018 — Roger E. Magowitz, founder of the Seena Magowitz Foundation, wants you to help him do something that’s never been done: Triple the average 5-year survival rate of patients with pancreatic cancer, the nation’s third leading cause of cancer related death.
You can join him in this endeavor by attending the 2018 Seena Magowitz Golf Classic, Aug. 25-27, headquartered at the five-star Boston Harbor Hotel. The Saturday-through-Monday event includes: a boat tour, clambake and lobster fest, a gala dinner, and golf tournament, which will be held at the celebrated Wellesley Country Club.
“This is a remarkable cause and this will be a memorable weekend,” said Roger Magowitz, who created the foundation in memory of this mother, who succumbed to this disease. “Our mission is to advance awareness, enable early detection, extend survival, and the eventual eradication of pancreatic cancer, the most lethal of all cancers.”
Nearly 40 percent of pancreatic cancer patients die within the first 6 months of diagnosis, and 75 percent die within the first year. In 2018, more than 44,000 Americans will succumb to this dreaded disease.
Now in its 16th year, the Seena Magowitz Golf Classic has raised nearly $8 million for clinical trials designed by the Phoenix-based Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen). Since the Golf Classic began, TGen Physician-In-Chief Dr. Daniel Von Hoff has guided three of the nation’s four clinical trials shown to extend survival for patients with advanced pancreatic cancer. His treatments have resulted in the FDA standard-of-care for advanced pancreatic cancer, and now are in use worldwide.
“This proves the Seena Magowitz model of rapid application of the best possible bench-science to patient-care works,” said Dr. Von Hoff, TGen Distinguished Professor, who also is the event’s keynote speaker. “This year, we are concentrating on why pancreatic cancer is so resistant to a patient’s own immune system.”
The Golf Classic has largely been supported by the mattress and home furnishings industry. The event’s 2018 Honorary Chair is Mark Quinn, co-founder of Spink & Edgar USA.

Master of Ceremonies for this year’s gala dinner will be Derrick Hall, President and CEO of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
