Helios Scholars at TGen graduate summer biomedical research program
45 students from across Arizona celebrated today at scientific symposium sponsored by Helios Education Foundation
PHOENIX, Ariz. - July 28, 2017 - Forty-five students, providing a snapshot of Arizona's next generation of leading physicians and scientists, graduate today from an eight-week training program at the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen).
Sponsored by Helios Education Foundation, the Helios Scholars at TGen program concluded its 11th year today with a daylong scientific symposium, including poster and oral presentations about discoveries that benefit real patients.
Helios Scholars at TGen is the research institute's largest summer internship program for Arizona students pursuing careers in bioscience and medicine. Helios Scholars work in TGen laboratories - receiving one-on-one mentorship from TGen scientists - as they pursue new discoveries involving patients with serious illnesses, including Alzheimer's disease, infectious diseases, and many types of cancer.
Funded for 25 years through a $6.5 million award from Helios Education Foundation, Helios Scholars at TGen educates, trains, and inspires the next generation of researchers and physicians in Arizona.
"Following last year's 10th anniversary of this preeminent student-research program, we are now starting the second decade of Helios Scholars at TGen," said Paul J. Luna, President and CEO, Helios Education Foundation. "The 464 students who have now successfully completed this program have developed knowledge and insights from first-hand experiences in TGen scientific laboratories, ultimately helping prepare them for success in college and career."
The program is open to Arizona undergraduate and graduate level students, including those in medical school. This summer's 45 Helios Scholars at TGen were selected from more than 500 applicants.
In addition to full-time, patient-focused research, Helios Scholars participate in professional development seminars, including science communication, public speaking, and basic business etiquette.
Past interns boast an array of impressive accomplishments, publishing scientific abstracts, scientific articles, and acceptance into medical and graduate schools.
