Barrett-Jackson auction raises $380,000 for groundbreaking cancer research at TGen
Sales of Mothers RTR Spec 3 Mustang and special Cutlass will fund colon and prostate cancer research as part of auction founder's legacy
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - March 18, 2014 - Two cars -
a tricked-out Mothers RTR Spec 3 Mustang, and a classic Oldsmobile
Cutlass - were sold at the world famous Barrett-Jackson Collector
Car Action in Scottsdale, raising $380,000 for colon and prostate
cancer research at the non-profit Translational Genomics Research
Institute (TGen).
The first car, the Mothers Mustang RTR Spec 3, was sold Jan. 14
for $110,000 to car collectors Bill and Doris Barker of Fort Worth,
Texas.
The Cutlass was sold Jan. 17 for $270,000 to car collector Ele
Chesney of Toms River, N.J., who then donated the Cutlass back to
Barrett-Jackson, so that it could be re-auctioned to further
benefit TGen at the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction set for
Sept. 25-27 in Las Vegas.
Proceeds from both cars go to the Barrett-Jackson Cancer
Research Fund at TGen. The fund, established in 2010, is a
salute to auction Chairman and CEO Craig Jackson's father, Russ,
and brother, Brian, whose lives were cut short by colon
cancer.
Doris Barker was at home watching the auction live on television
Jan. 14 when the Mustang RTR Spec 3 was announced. She immediately
called her husband, Bill, who was at the auction in
Scottsdale.
"She likes unusual cars," Bill said of the gray-trimmed, red
650-hp 2013 Mothers Ford Mustang RTR Spec 3, a collaboration of
drift racing champion Vaughn Gittin Jr., Mustang RTR and Mothers
Polishes-Waxes-Cleaners.
Once Doris found out it would benefit TGen, Bill said she told
him, "We definitely need to get it.
"Our family has been truly blessed, and we generally avoid
the limelight. But when someone is suffering, and their family is
suffering, it hit a spot in our hearts," Bill said of the couple's
desire to help TGen research and the patients that TGen
serves.
This tire-slaying, 6-speed Mustang, which features the latest
aftermarket technology in chassis and engine development,
aerodynamics, paint and audio, was donated by Mothers
Polishes-Waxes-Cleaners to benefit the Barrett-Jackson Cancer
Research Fund at TGen.
"This project takes the excellent foundation that Ford provides in
the Mustang to the next level of excitement with Vaughn's standard
RTR package. Then Team Mothers® took it again to the highest level
with the RTR Spec 3, and it supports a cause that has great meaning
to our family as well as the Jackson's," said Jim Holloway, Vice
President of Mothers.
Cutlass donated back to benefit TGen again at Las Vegas
auction
The Cutlass, a black and gold 350-hp 1979 Oldsmobile Cutlass Hurst
Coupe - the kind first crafted in 1968 by Jack "Doc" Watson and the
Hurst Shifter Corporation - was bought by Chesney because she is a
family friend of Craig Jackson and wanted to support TGen's cancer
research in memory of Craig's father and brother.
It was previously owned by Linda Vaughn, known as Miss Hurst
Golden Shifter since 1966 and considered the first lady of motor
sports from her roots in drag racing, as well as Indy Car racing
and NASCAR. This 1979 Hurst Olds is one of the last Hurst Vehicles
presented to Vaughn for her dedication to the Hurst Shifter name.
As it crossed the auction block, Vaughn fought back tears onstage
when it was gaveled down at $270,000.
Once again, Craig Jackson and the dedicated team at Barrett
Jackson have shown tremendous generosity in facilitating classic
car sales to benefit TGen research," said Michael Bassoff,
President of the TGen Foundation. "Because of his personal family
experience, Craig knows the tremendous needs of patients and their
families for new breakthroughs in colon and prostate cancer, and
his charity provides renewed hope."
Raffle for Las Vegas auction raises an additional
$10,000
In addition, TGen raised $10,000 during the auction for cancer
research through a raffle won by Greg Thompson of Canada. He will
receive two VIP tickets to the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car
Auction in Las Vegas, including a 5-night stay at Mandalay Bay
Resort and Casino and two airfare vouchers. Although the raffle was
held at the auction, the TGen Foundation conducted this promotion.
Neither Barrett-Jackson Auction Co. LLC nor any of its affiliates
have responsibility for conducting this promotion.
