TGen helps the Arizona Experience showcase the state's progress in Biotechnology and Life Sciences
TGen President Dr. Jeffrey Trent video highlights emerging role
of genomics in improving patient care
PHOENIX, Ariz. - April 26, 2012 - Dr. Jeffrey Trent, President and
Research Director of the Translational Genomic Research Institute
(TGen), speaks about the role of genomics in improving patient care
on Arizona's new Arizona Experience website.
The Arizona Experience, a virtual celebration of Arizona's
Centennial - Feb. 14, 2012 - is rolling out new features each month
of 2012. This month's web package about Biotechnology and Life
Sciences includes a video of Dr. Trent, discussing TGen's role in
Genomic Research:

In the video, Dr. Trent explains how using DNA analysis to help
determine the best treatments for patients represents "the start of
a new era" in medicine:
"Particularly starting in cancer, the ability to use information
from the genome in support of individualized patient treatment;
it's the basis of everything we do at TGen," Dr. Trent explains in
the video. "Over the course of the next 100 year, we'll still be
working on the information from the genome; how to make medicine
more personal, which is really that right medicine, for the right
disease, and the right patient, at the right time, at the right
dose."
The Arizona Experience web pages about Biotechnology and Life
Sciences showcases the organizations, institutions and research
facilities that have helped catapult Arizona to one of the nation's
leading states in biomedical research.
TGen, Flinn Foundation, AZBio, BIO5 Institute, ASU Biodesign
Institute, NAU, and numerous institutions provided their insight
and materials in order to showcase the successes in Arizona's
biotech community.
"One of the recommendations of Arizona's Bioscience Roadmap is to
inform state citizens on the importance and potential of the
biosciences," said Brad Halvorsen, Vice President for
Communications, Flinn Foundation. "The Arizona Experience website
will be instrumental in helping to get the message to broad
audiences that may be new to the biosciences."
The roll out of the Arizona Biotechnology and Life Sciences theme
includes:
- Interview with Dr. Jeffrey Trent, President and Research Director TGen
- Arizona Biosciences: A Success Story
- Interview with Dr. Nadja Anderson, Director of BIOTECH Project.
- Bioscience education in Arizona's colleges, universities, and high schools. Discover how students are impacting their world, one project at a time.
- Interactive maps pinpointing growth in biosciences since 2002, including patient care facilities and biomedical companies.
Additional topics and content will continue to roll out for the next 30 days, including:
- Featured Artist - Student centennial art competition winners from across the state.
- Tumamoc Hill America's first Desert Botanical Laboratory; the birthplace of conservation ecology.
- Explore how citizen science groups around the state are impacting their world.
