Seena Magowitz Golf Classic celebrates 10th anniversary
Dec. 8 golf tournament at Arizona Biltmore benefits TGen cancer research
PHOENIX, Ariz. - October 23, 2012 - Promising
to be the best yet, the Seena Magowitz Foundation will host its
10th annual Seena Magowitz Golf Classic, benefiting pancreatic
cancer research at the Translational Genomics Research Institute
(TGen).
This 10th annual Magowitz golf tournament - which coincides with
TGen's 10th anniversary, and with the 10th year of Arizona's
Bioscience Roadmap project - will be held Dec. 8 at the storied
Arizona Biltmore Resort and Spa in Phoenix.
Derrick Hall, President and CEO of the Arizona Diamondbacks, is
this year's tournament master of ceremonies.
"Having lost my father to this terrible disease, I can empathize
with the families and friends of those whose loved ones have
suffered with pancreatic cancer," Hall said. "I feel confident
that, through the efforts of this tournament, TGen will be better
positioned to unmask the genetic origins of this disease."
The tournament, which in the past has drawn more than 200 golfers,
benefits a TGen-led international effort to eradicate pancreatic
cancer, the fourth leading cause of cancer death in America.
"A decade ago, I don't think any of us could have foreseen the
tremendous progress that has been made by TGen to help conquer this
disease," said Roger Magowitz, President of the Magowitz
Foundation, which he founded in honor of his mother, Seena, who
died of pancreatic cancer in 2001. "The advent of TGen's whole
genome sequencing and the ability to search out each patient's
genetic vulnerability is a phenomenal biomedical advance."
TGen's use of whole genome sequencing in analyzing three
pancreatic cancer patients was recently documented in a scientific
study, funded in part by the Magowitz Foundation, and published
Oct. 10 by the Public Library of Science.
"TGen's groundbreaking pancreatic cancer research receives a
tremendous boost from the Seena Magowitz Foundation's annual
December events," said Michael Bassoff, President of the non-profit
TGen Foundation. "Industry leaders like Leggett & Platt and
Mattress Firm are making a difference in the lives of pancreatic
cancer patients today."
Leggett & Platt COO Karl Glassman, who lost his mother to
breast cancer and a good friend to pancreatic cancer, is this
year's tournament Honorary Chairman. "If we continue working
together in a hard-fought campaign to curb this brutal disease, I'm
confident that our efforts will make a life-changing
difference."
Pancreatic cancer annually takes the lives of more than 37,000
Americans. A staggering 74 percent of those diagnosed die within
the first year, and only 6 percent survive more than five
years.
For the first time, this year's Magowitz Classic will include a
doubles tennis tournament. This will be a round robin competition
of 12 teams.
On Dec. 7, the evening before the tennis and golf tournaments, the
event kicks off its 10th anniversary with a special Monte Carlo
casino welcome from 6-11 p.m. at the Biltmore.
The golf tournament, chaired by Tournament Co-Founder Ray
Bojanowski, begins Dec. 8 with a 7 a.m. breakfast and registration,
followed by an 8 a.m. shotgun start. The tennis tournament starts
at 8:30 a.m. A luncheon, auction and raffle will follow at 1
p.m.
A golf foursome, including the welcome and luncheon, is $1,750. A
tennis twosome, including welcome and luncheon, is $800. Individual
golfers or tennis players is $450. For those who don't play golf or
tennis, and still want to participate, the welcome is $100 per
person, while the luncheon is $150 per person. Golf Classic room
rates at the Biltmore start at $139 per night.
