Awards recognize sustained commitment to supporting cutting-edge scientific discoveries

PHOENIX, Ariz. - April 18, 2011 - A founding board member of the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) and a foundation that helps fund TGen were honored recently at the 9th anniversary TGen Founders Dinner.

Bert Atwater Getz Sr., who served on TGen's board since the non-profit biomedical research instate was created in 2002, received TGen's John S. McCain Leadership Award, named for U.S. Sen. John McCain, a former chairman of TGen's National Advisory Council.

Now a member of TGen's Board of Governors, Getz is Chairman of the Scottsdale-based Globe Corporation, a diversified real-estate development and investment group.

"Without question, Bert Getz has been one of the foremost champions of patients and TGen's ability to provide patient benefit," said Dr. Jeffrey Trent, TGen's President and Research Director. "Because of Bert's business acumen, his presence on the TGen Board has provided the institute with extremely competent guidance since our beginning. I highly value the important personal friendship Bert and I share."

Steven G. Seleznow, President and CEO of the Arizona Community Foundation (ACF), accepted TGen's Cox Communications Collaborative Spirit Award on behalf of the statewide philanthropy. With more than 1,000 charitable funds under management, ACF provides flexible giving options for donors, major funding for non-profits and students, and leadership around key community issues.

A partnership between ACF and TGen announced in December is making it easier for donors to contribute to TGen's biomedical research through charitable gift annuities.

"This partnership could provide a substantial boost for TGen, which already benefits from the expertise of exceedingly knowledgeable board members that our organization shares with the Arizona Community Foundation," Dr. Trent said.

Both awards were announced March 29 at the 9th anniversary TGen Founders Dinner at Scottsdale Airport's Hanger One.

Jacquie and Bennett Dorrance hosted the event. Bennett Dorrance is Managing Partner of Scottsdale-based DMB Associates Inc., and he also is Chairman of the TGen Foundation Board of Directors.

TGen Foundation President Michael Bassoff said the awards recognize sustained support by Arizona individuals and organizations for TGen's scientific discoveries.

"Arizonans have shown time and again that they are committed to helping TGen make groundbreaking biomedical discoveries that are helping patients every day," Bassoff said.
