Society of Surgical Oncology Honors TGen's Trent with James Ewing Lecture

March 20, 2004

The Society of Surgical Oncology today awarded Dr. Jeffrey M. Trent the James Ewing Lectureship. This award is presented annually and recognizes leadership in the field of cancer research. Last years recipient was Dr. Andrew Von Eschenbach, the Director of the National Cancer Institute at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The mission of the Society of Surgical Oncology is to ensure that all cancer patients receive the highest quality, comprehensive, multimodal cancer care. The Award honors the Society's founder, Dr. James Ewing, a pioneer in cancer research.

Trent's lecture, entitled, "Genomic Approaches to Novel Molecular Target Identification and Translation", focused on merging genetic technology emanating from the Human Genome Project into the clinical practice of cancer medicine.

Dr. Trent, the President and Scientific Director of the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) in Phoenix, was previously the Director of Intramural Research and Head of the Cancer Genetics Branch at the National Human Genome Research Institute at the NIH. Dr. Trent has dedicated his scientific career to the study of melanoma, prostate and breast cancer.

Trent is the author of over 300 manuscripts in the scientific literature, he sits on the editorial boards of several major scientific publications, and he has received several awards and honors including the G. Burroughs Mider Lecture which honors each year one scientist at the NIH for their meritorious research.
