Dr. Caporaso is an expert in microbiome research, including environmental and human-associated microbiomes. He leads the development of QIIME 2 (https://qiime2.org), the most highly cited microbiome bioinformatics platform. In addition to his focus on designing, building, and teaching accessible and cutting edge computational tools for microbiome research, his lab is engaged in and runs many of their own microbiome projects focused on early cancer detection, assessing the impact of fecal microbiota transplant on treatment outcomes, and developing applications of microbiome science in environmental sustainability.
