Sarah, a rising junior at Mountain Ridge High School in Glendale, says "We were exposed to the whole gamut of possibilities in the bioscience field."
Imagine a community where you are surrounded by encouraging mentors and close friends, each inspiring in their own way and crazily talented. That is what TGen Bioscience Leadership Academy (BLA) is to me.
My name is Sarah, and I am a member of the TGen BLA inaugural class of 2018. I am a rising junior at Mountain Ridge High School, and enjoy mathematics, the piano and violin.
My time in TGen Bioscience Leadership Academy (BLA) would not have been possible without the support of many. I would like to thank the Helios Education Foundation funding the program, and TGen for allowing us to learn from their extraordinary scientists. Also, to Julie and Heather for supporting us every day, and being our mentors.
The two weeks of TGen BLA were amazing, as my fellow alumni and I flourished under the instruction of the TGen community. We were exposed to the whole gamut of possibilities in the bioscience field, from mass spectrometry and bioinformatics to bioethics and patent law. I learned that being a bioscience leader doesn’t necessarily mean solely doing lab work, however crucial it is to scientific innovation. Being a bioscience leader means representing the field of bioscience in both knowledge and demeanor, in fostering a culture of receptiveness and paving the way for a future generation of bioscience leaders. This program nurtures our potential to excel by introducing countless bioscience leaders through our seminar speakers and mentors
The opportunity to meet and shadow TGen scientists and Helios scholars was incredible. Seeing and hearing, in person, explanations and demonstrations of research is far superior than simply reading a textbook. I came into the program expecting a fantastic two weeks, and it went above and beyond in surpassing every expectation. Here, I gained friendships and connections that will last for a lifetime, in addition to incredibly inspiring experiences. In the TGen Bioscience Leadership Academy, not only did I learn about the biosciences, but also about who I am as a future leader and person.
