We Put The Fun In Family Day

TGen Hosts First Open House for Staff, Faculty, Interns - Fun Ensues

The building did not burn down, nor were any interns trapped in the walk-in freezer.

All in all, the first TGen Family Day Open House served up food, fun, friends and family in the air-conditioned confines of our laboratories - and no experiments were harmed in the celebration on June 24.

For the past few years, TGen has hosted a Spring Picnic at one of our local Phoenix parks, with field games, rides and barbecue, to fellowship with our co-workers outside of the labs and show our appreciation to their families. Because of some scheduling issues, the TGen Culture Committee decided to take it inside this year to show off the place we call home, 40-or-more hours each week.

To keep faculty and staff from staying inside their silos, we set up trivia stations around the building. Guests had to answer 15 questions of TGen Trivia in honor of our 15th anniversary. They could either take one of our scheduled, 20-minute tours of the building, or they could go on a self-guided quest to find the answers. Trivia questionnaires were entered into a drawing for four tickets to an Arizona Diamondbacks game - with Vick Mehta, the proud papa of Ivy Scholar Vilina Mehta, winning the contest! Click here for a complete list of questions and answers!

Kids enjoyed our Craft Room, located in our fourth-floor breakroom. Little ones colored in our very own TGen-themed coloring book or created their own "BOOTIEFUL BOOTIES" to protect their feet in the lab. Older kids could make bracelets with UV-light activated beads or paint refrigerator magnets made from used flowcell slides and Affymetrix chips from our sequencers. Everyone enjoyed piling into the Mad Scientist Photobooth, presented by Snapshot! Photo Booths.

For lunch, we had barbecue and vegetarian options from AZ Barbecue Catering as well as two giant anniversary cakes. The best part of the day was seeing our interns show off the labs to their very proud parents, and watching children and family members of our staff learn about what their loved ones are working on. It was a great way to kick off our 15th Anniversary year.
