Dr. Glen Weiss is a physician-scientist with a joint appointment at TGen and the TGen Clinical Research Services at Scottsdale Healthcare. He is a board certified in internal medicine and medical oncology. Dr. Weiss joined TGen to serve as interface between laboratory investigators and clinical research aspects, thus accelerating clinical application of new developments in cancer therapy and diagnostics.
In his dual function as physician and investigator, Dr. Weiss sees and enrolls patients in early phase clinical studies and is actively involved in laboratory research in the Lung Cancer Unit in the Cancer and Cell Biology Division at TGen.
One of his interests lies in microRNA regulation of genes. He and his collaborators have validated several microRNAs regulating key genes in cancer. In addition, Dr. Weiss is developing assays predictive of response in patients receiving therapies targeting these specific proteins.
His research focuses around genomic and microRNA characterization of lung cancer and early-detection strategies. He has led the first saliva-based gene expression profiling clinical trial for the early-detection of non-small cell lung cancer. This is also the first screening study to specifically include never-smokers with lung cancer, a population comprising roughly 10% of new lung cancer diagnoses in the U.S.
Dr. Weiss also takes an active role in designing clinical trials for new cancer therapeutic agents. He leads the thoracic oncology research program at the TGen Clinical Research Services at Scottsdale Healthcare, is a founding member of the CRAB Clinical Trials Consortium, and holds a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine appointment at the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix.
Dr. Weiss received his medical degree from Sackler School of Medicine in Tel Aviv and completed internal medicine residency at SUNY-Downstate in Brooklyn. He completed his specialty training in medical oncology/hematology at University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Aurora and served as Chief Fellow prior to joining TGen and Scottsdale Healthcare.
