Maricopa Community Colleges/TGen Internship Highlights
The Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD), consisting of 10 colleges Valley wide, has pledged to provide a trained bioscience workforce. All of the Maricopa colleges are exploring ways to expand their bioscience offerings. On January 17th, 2003, the Maricopa Community Colleges, with Governing Board approval, entered into a formal academic affiliation with TGen for a period of 10 years. Under this affiliation, the District provided $1million to TGen in exchange for specific educational benefits of comparable value to be realized from access to TGen personnel and facilities.
The partnership has been an exciting adventure for both academic programs. MCCCD students and faculty members have learned from lectures and presentations by TGen researchers, and have benefited from the opportunity to gain lab experience through internships and sabbaticals, working with an excellent research team.
Since the program began, nine students from various MCC colleges, including Mesa Community College and Glendale Community College have spent thousands of hours interning with the scientists at TGen. In addition 3 faculty members from Glendale and Chandler-Gilbert have interned at TGen. Their lab internships have been hands-on and cutting-edge. Some of them will use their college degrees and this experience to directly enter the workforce; others will choose to pursue additional education in the field at the university level.
This video showcases the MCCCD/TGen partnership and highlights some of the interns and their mentors. Both partners look forward to continuing the internship program and strengthening their individual programs to help train the next generation of researchers.
